EBRAINS-Italy

The Italian node of the European distributed infrastructure of “EBRAINS” allows clinical and experimental activities in the health sector to adequately exploit the most advanced modelling, computation and data analysis technologies available in the field of neuroscience.

Objectives

The primary objective is to unite diverse groups possessing cross-disciplinary skills in the fields of modelling, High-Performance Computing (HPC), and experimental/theoretical neuroscience within Italy, integrating their activities to ensure synergy and generate substantial progress in the production and dissemination of knowledge across scientific, industrial, and social sectors nationwide. The ultimate aim lies in the creation of a new Research Infrastructure within the National Research Infrastructure Plan (PNIR) with high and medium priority.

Outcomes

Incorporated into the ESFRI roadmap (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures), EBRAINS represents the evolution of The Human Brain Project (HBP) from a scientific project to a widespread research infrastructure comprised of forming national consortia. The project’s results in terms of know-how will be made available through a single access point to bolster technological transfer and the development of new international collaborations for research and development. One of the specific objectives includes the establishment of a Neuromorphic Computing Lab focused on the study, development, and utilization of the latest neuromorphic technologies.
