A live neuroconcert took place on the 9th of September at the Teatro Niccolini in Florence, as part of the 112th National Congress of the Italian Physical Society: a one-of-a-kind show in which music, brain activity and visual transformation are interwoven into a single performance. NeuroRhapsody was developed by Francesco Pavone’s Lab at LENS- University of Florence, in collaboration with Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini and ISIA Firenze Design – Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche.
During the live performance, the musicians’ electroencephalographic signals and other biosignals were captured in real time and translated into continuously evolving visual landscapes. The performers’ neural activity thus became an active component of the work, shaping the images and creating a dynamic circuit between perception, cognition and sound. The stage was turned into an experimental platform in which scientific data were not merely measured and represented, but became part of an experience lived by the audience.
Through this integration, NeuroRhapsody offered both an aesthetic exploration and a scientific investigation of how music is perceived, processed and embodied by the brain.
